Tracking without cookies
What the Orbit snippet collects, what it leaves out, and why you do not need a consent banner for it.
The Orbit tracking script is about one kilobyte and sets no cookies. This post explains exactly what it records so you can describe it accurately in your privacy policy.
What it records
- The page path, without the query string
- The referring site, used only to group traffic into sources
- A random visitor id kept in the browser's local storage so unique visitors can be counted
What it does not record
It does not collect names, email addresses, IP addresses or anything typed into a form. It respects the browser's Do Not Track setting and stops entirely when that is on.
Counting signups and purchases
Call orbit.track("signup") after a successful signup and orbit.track("purchase", { value: 49 }) after a payment. If you prefer to record these from your own server, use the events API with a write key.
Check the rules that apply to your business and region before you decide on a consent banner. This post describes the script, it is not legal advice.
